Spending More Money on Nutritional Supplements: Is It Worth It?

According to certified pharmacist and nutritional consultant Konstantin Monastyrsky (author of gutsense.org) an “estimated 140+ million Americans are taking mass-market (a.k.a. consumer-grade) dietary supplements. The majority of them are useless at best, outright harmful at worst.”   “The world's most heavily promoted and widely used brands, such as Centrum or One A Day,” Monastyrsky adds, “may include ingredients also found in laxatives, hair dyes, herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, fertilizers, cement, glues, resins, and God knows what else. Some of these substances are well-known carcinogens, irritants, allergens, and birth-defect-causing agents.” Scared? We don’t blame you. These are tricky times for consumers. You want to make good choices; you want to be smart and buy what’s best for your health, but you also don’t want to feel like you’re getting ripped off. We agree with Mr. Monastyrsky, and we believe you deserve dietary supplements that are safe and effective. Considering some of the ingredients in the cheaper brands, you might reconsider your purchase. Take for example One-a-Day Women’s Tablets. This widely popular multivitamin is loaded with extra ingredients that don’t help your health one bit. Compare it to the more expensive Perque Life Guard multivitamin – which has no added ingredients – and, sure, you’ll be paying more, but considering the purer ingredients in Perque’s version, you might agree it’s the smarter buy.

As is often the case, the cheaper supplement shown above has extra ingredients that are non-benefiting for your body. As Monastyrsky says: “Consumer-grade supplements are optimized for extended shelf life. To mask oxidation, spoilage, odor, and discoloration common to all supplements, their manufacturers use artificial colorings, preservatives, and glazes.” Buyer, beware. Look twice at the list of inactive ingredients before you choose the less expensive option.
