While a man can certainly make a good friend, women are generally more comfortable talking with other women. A recent article in Psychology Today focused on female friendships. It explained that men and women are simply wired differently, especially when it comes to the way we communicate with friends. We think differently, problem-solve differently and feel things differently. A female friend is more likely to understand your feelings because she’s probably had the same feelings herself at some point. Have you ever looked at your friend or sister and known something was wrong before she ever said a word? That’s because women have a high level of intuition. “Girlfriends have a distinctive way of reading emotions and intuitively recognizing what needs to be done then acting on it,” the article states.
Women tend to be more verbal. We’re more likely to swap happy, funny or sad stories. That verbal communication piece is so important. Sometimes we just need someone to talk to and the best person for the job is another woman.
Keep those Female Friends Close
It’s so easy to lose track of friends, we often don’t realize we’ve drifted away or lost contact with one until we turn around one day and say, “Hey, I haven’t heard from her in a really long time!” Some people are really good at staying in contact with the people they care about, but a lot of us aren’t. I’m inspired by stories of groups who go on girls’ trips. They have fun bonding and come back with a stronger set of relationships. You might not have the time or budget for a vacation with friends, but there are other things you can do to strengthen that bond because a good friend should be celebrated. Here are just a few ideas.
Ways to celebrate your friendships
Host or organize a breakfast, luncheon or dinner with a group of women.
Call a friend and put a date on a calendar to get together. Setting a date makes it more likely to happen.
Connect with out of town friends with a handwritten note, an e-card, a phone call or text.
Go for a walk together
Invite a friend to join your family for dinner
Go to a concert together
Look up a friend you haven’t spoken to in years and send her a message to reconnect.
Invite friends over just because. Leave it casual.
Host a game night.
Work out together.
